From the very start, it was Peter Hughes, Holden's exterior design manager, who composed a two-dimensional image of the VE, a take off of the VE representation drafted prior by Michael Simcoe, Holden's design director in 1999. It was known within Holden as the "Bill of Design," for the draft served the purpose of the future VE Commodore's production design. There were obvious alterations to the model, which included the VE LED lights, along with the low-profile side window cluster, and the wheelbase was drawn out more; however, the domineering look stayed.
Commodore models had always changed the design of their tail lights, using several different looks.
Commodore chose to use standard VE LED lights for its lower-base models, but they used a more ornate design for its luxurious models.
For example, the VE Omega featured the standard red round lamps with the clear reverse/indicator lamp. On the other hand, the Calais and Berlina models featured a tri-striped design.
The raciest looking VE LED lights were included on the SSV variation. These VE LED lights featured a black reflector, chrome bezel with red centre lamp and clear reverse/indicator lamp.
The SSV tail lights have become a popular option for those wanting to modify their VE Commodore.
Holden's Special Vehicles chose a different sheet metal to redesign the tail lights. The newer sheet metal was a first for the HSV, as it was a new change.
The HSV VE lights were rectangular in design, and the company had it wrap around the rear of each car. The lamps themselves featured two round LED lights that were reminiscent of the famous Nissan Skyline. The HSV tail lights differ, as they cannot be managed to be put on standard Commodore models. The redesigning of the VE LED lights also applied to the headlights. As with past models, the VE LED lights were more decorative for the luxurious models.
The lower basic models were produced with black reflector headlights, while the luxurious models of the VE Commodore and SSV had a decorative projector lamp that was centred, offsetting the commanding look.
The VE LED lights continue to be a featured basic of the VE Commodore.
